How Did Noah and Abraham Get Blessings From God?

As believers of God, we all want to be blessed by God. Then, how should we act to receive His blessings? I remember that the Bible says: “And it came to pass, as he spoke these things, a certain woman of the company lifted up her voice, and said to him, Blessed is the womb that bore you, and the breasts which you have sucked.

But he said, Yes rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it” (Luke 11:27-28). From the Lord’s word, we can see that those who are able to listen to God’s word and then keep it are the most blessed people. It’s really true. For Noah, Abraham, and Peter,they all received God’s blessings because they could obey and follow God’s words after hearing them. Then let us gather the deeds of Noah and Abraham to discuss how they gained God’s blessings.

God treasures Noah’s pure heart that submits to God.

After being corrupted by Satan, mankind became ever more depraved, even to the point where God didn’t bear to look. As a result, God decided to destroy the earth with a flood. He commanded Noah to make an ark and to preach His will to man in that age. For Noah, this was undoubtedly a test: On the one hand, he didn’t even know what boat was. So we could imagine that it was almost impossible for him to make such a tremendous ark. On the other hand, at that time, the whole surface of the ground was moistened by mists and it never rained. If he told others that God would use a flood to destroy the world, who would believe that? But Noah never considered any of these, nor did he ask God how He was going to destroy the earth with a flood or when it would happen. He just simply and directly obeyed God’s instructions and acted in accordance with what God required.

In addition, the long process of building the ark and spreading God’s will was also a severe test for Noah. During the time when he constructed the ark, he was faced with all kinds of troubles, such as lacking funds, a manpower shortage, the project being enormous, and the construction taking over one hundred years. These were all practical difficulties and problems. What’s more, when he preached to others in the same age the message that God would send a flood to destroy the earth, they all scoffed at and slandered him, saying that he was crazy, stupid, and insane. During this long period of testing, he did not violate God’s command at all but tirelessly led his family to build the ark and preached God’s will. He did his utmost and was conscientious in fulfilling God’s commission, without any perfunctoriness. Eventually, God gave a promise to Noah and his family, saying: “Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth. And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, and on every fowl of the air, on all that moves on the earth, and on all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered. Every moving thing that lives shall be meat for you; even as the green herb have I given you all things. … And you, be you fruitful, and multiply; bring forth abundantly in the earth, and multiply therein” (Genesis 9:1-3, 7). It can be seen that Noah receiving God’s blessings and promise was primarily because during this long-term and severe test, he showed God his true heart of obeying God, satisfying God, and following God’s words.

Abraham resigns himself to parting with what he loves to satisfy God.

Abraham’s wife had never borne a child before. When he was 100 years old, God gave him a son named Isaac. Abraham brought Isaac up with immense love. However, after over ten years, God told him to give Isaac as a burnt offering. For Abraham, this was undoubtedly even more painful than to be asked to give up his own life. But when faced with God’s command, he did not recoil or reject it, nor did he doubt or complain about God. Instead, he chose to obey God’s command and offer up his only beloved son even without asking why. This resounding testimony showed God his heart and his absolute obedience. Thus, God not only did not let him offer Isaac but blessed him, saying: “That in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply your seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is on the sea shore; and your seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; And in your seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because you have obeyed my voice” (Genesis 22:17-18).

Noah and Abraham could receive God’s blessings and promise not merely because they were able to follow God’s words on the outside, but more importantly, because in God’s tests for them, they could give their heart to God, obey God sincerely, follow the commands of God, and satisfy His will without any consideration of their own personal benefit, their loss or gain. They were people who took walking in God’s way as their principle in life, people who lived within God’s words, and moreover, were the people who lived under God’s blessings. Therefore, if we want to be blessed by God, we must give our true heart to God just like Noah and Abraham. No matter what God’s instruction to us is, how much God’s words do not match our notions, or how God tests us, we should be truly obedient before Him, act according to His words, and satisfy Him by being a person who truly does His will. In this way, we will see more of God’s leadership and guidance in our daily life and live under His blessings.
